New Car: 2011 Volkswagen Caddy
It’s time to tee up a new Caddy. After being on sale for six years and selling nearly 800,000 units in total, VW has given its trusty van a makeover, which promises to up quality, refinement and economy.
The Caddy adopts the latest VW family look which features on the current Polo and Transporter. A simple two-bar grille dominates the front, while roof rails can be specced for the first time. At the rear, the van gets revised light clusters for a classier look.
On the inside, there are new instruments, steering wheels and sat-nav systems which have plucked from the latest Golf range. For the first time, the second row of seats is completely removable on all models, allowing for a maximum cargo capacity of 3,030-litres on the five-seater Caddy, and up to 3,880-litres on the Caddy Maxi.
Under the bonnet, there are four diesels to choose from. There are two 1.6-litre units, with 74bhp or 101bhp; and two 2.0-litre units, with 108bhp or 138bhp. VW’s seven-speed DSG gearbox and 4MOTION four-wheel drive will be available on some models.
A BlueMotion version which uses the 74bhp 1.6-litre engine, and features stop start, helps return fuel consumption of 57mpg and carbon dioxide emissions of 129 g/km. VW claims this version will manage 735 miles on one tank of fuel.
