Hyundai Recalls 2011 Sonata

Hyundai Recalls 2011 Sonata

Hyundai had to issue a recall after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) confirmed a problem in the car’s steering wheel column. Apparently some universal joint connections are either improperly assembled or insufficiently tightened. And it’s a big recall with 139,500 units involved. The affected cars are built between December 11, 2009, through September 10, 2010.

On cars manufactured between Dec. 11, 2009, and Sept. 10, 2010, the steering column shaft universal joint may have been improperly assembled or not tightened enough. You can check your car’s manufacture date on a sticker on the driver’s side doorjamb.

The problem is significant enough that a complete separation could occur, leading to reduction or loss of steering. Dealers will inspect the cars, replace defective parts and update the steering software free of charge.

This is a significant recall for Hyundai. The automaker has been riding a wave of sales success spearheaded by the redesigned Sonata, which has been a top 10 best-seller for the past few months.

The recall is expected to begin in October but no specific date was given. For more information, owners can call Hyundai at 800-633-5151 or NHTSA’s hot line at 888-327-4236.

Nissan is Recalling 2010 Altima

Nissan is recalling 2010 Altima vehicle manufactured from April 7, 2010 to April 13, 2010. About 113 Nissan Altima sedans may not have side member assembly components welded to specification due to a tool maintenance error.

If several structural welds are out of place, it may affect the crash worthiness of the vehicle. This could then increase the chance of death in a side crash.

Porsche Boxster Recall 2011

The Boxster Spyder, a stunning car by Porsche, has a defect which is creating a big buzz around. Porsche has notified the government of deficiency in some of the models of Boxster Spyder convertibles. Porsche confirmed all the information to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Problem is with a defective locking hook on the sun shield, which may not connected properly into the lock catch on the windscreen frame of the car. When the car will be in its top speed then there are some chances that the sun shield might get opened as it is not locked in place and create a major safety hazard.

The Porsche Boxter Spyder is a special-edition car with a separable soft-top. The limited run is likely the reason for such a small number of recalled vehicles.

Dealers will replace the locking hook and lock catch with new, redesigned components for the nine vehicles in question and will do so for free. All the owners of Boxter Spyder can contact NHTSA’s vehicle safety online and also on their contact numbers.

GM to recall 1.3M Compacts

General Motors Co. said Monday it will recall 1.3 million Chevrolet and Pontiac compact cars sold in the U.S., Canada and Mexico to fix power steering motors that can fail.

The recall affects 2005 to 2010 Chevrolet Cobalts, 2007 to 2010 Pontiac G5s, 2005 and 2006 Pontiac Pursuits sold in Canada and 2005 and 2006 Pontiac G4s sold in Mexico.

The automaker said the vehicles are still safe to drive and never lose their steering, but it may be harder to steer them when traveling under 15 mph.

GM spokesman Alan Adler said it will take time for the automaker to get 1.3 million new power steering motors from the supplier, JTEKT Corp., and GM will notify car owners when the parts are available.

Adler said the failures are rare and the cars can still be driven until motors can be replaced by dealers. Drivers will see a warning light and hear a chime if the power steering fails, but they could be surprised when the steering becomes more difficult.

GM told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration about the recall on Monday. NHTSA began an investigation into 905,000 of the models on Jan. 27 after getting 1,100 complaints that the cars lost their power steering assist. The complaints included 14 crashes and one injury.

The recall comes at a time of heightened interest in auto safety after sudden acceleration problems experienced in some Toyota Motor Corp. vehicles.

Toyota has had to recall 8.5 million vehicles worldwide to fix problems with sticky gas pedals, floor mats that can snag the gas pedal and cause unintended acceleration, and brake software problems with the Prius gas-electric hybrid.

Toyota executives have been summoned to testify before congressional committees investigating the company's actions and whether NHTSA did enough to make sure the Toyotas are safe.

Mazda Recalls 2010 CX-9

Mazda is recalling 12,300 CX-9 vehicles with optional heated front seats because the seat heater control circuit can overheat and result in smoke or fire, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The affected CX-9 vehicles were built in Hiroshima, Japan, from July 28, 2009, through January 14, 2010. Mazda said in other documentation filed with the federal government that it first became aware of the problem from a field report from the U.S. market "describing an incident where the seat heater could not be turned off even [sic] the ignition key position is turned to Lock [off] and resulting [sic] a battery run-out and/or burn damage on the seat cushion."

Mazda dealers will install an additional ground harness on the seat heater control system. The seat heater control circuit will be replaced if necessary and/or the seat will be repaired for free. The recall is expected to begin March 9.
