2009 Volkswagen Routan
Volkswagen’s newest minivan, the Routan, does not harken back to the days of the legendary VW Microbus.
The Routan is available in three trim levels: S, SE and SEL. Two engines are available and they are both Chrysler-built V-6 designs. The base engine is a 3.8-liter overhead valve V-6 rated at 197 horsepower. The top-of-the-line engine is a single overhead cam 4.0-liter V-6 rated at 251 horsepower. There is only one transmission available for the Routan and that is Chrysler’s six-speed automatic. Fuel economy is rated at 17 miles per gallon in the city and 25 miles per gallon on the highway for the 4.0-liter and that’s better than the slightly smaller, less sophisticated 3.8-liter V-6 delivers.
Safety systems include ABS, traction control, antiskid, and curtain side impact airbags.
Base prices range from $25,000 up to nearly $35,000 and the trim packs (which include power-adjustable pedals) Premium Packages and Entertainment packages can take the sticker price well above the bases, so be careful when checking the option list. Alloy wheels are available but list for $450.00
